Valiora Reviews: Why “Proprietary Blend” Is the Whole Story

Two words on a label do more work than anything else on the page. Understanding exactly what they permit — and what they conceal — is the most transferable thing in this review.

The short version

A proprietary blend must list its ingredients in descending order by weight, but need not disclose individual amounts.

What the term legally means

Under US supplement labelling rules, a manufacturer may group ingredients into a proprietary blend and declare only the total weight of the blend, not the amount of each component. The ingredients within must be listed in descending order by weight.

That last requirement is the only information a blend gives you. If berberine is listed first, it is the heaviest component. It does not tell you whether that means 600 mg or 60.

The legitimate reason brands use it

There is one, and it deserves stating fairly: formulation is genuine intellectual property. A company that spends money identifying a ratio that works does not necessarily want a competitor to copy it from the label on day one.

That argument is strongest for complex blends with many components and a non-obvious ratio. It is weakest for a three-ingredient formula made of berberine, green tea and apple cider vinegar — three of the most widely used ingredients in the entire weight-management category. There is no secret here to protect.

The three-bottle package covers the 90 days the ingredient trials actually used while keeping you closer to the refund window.

The less legitimate reason

The other use of a blend is to conceal that expensive ingredients appear in small amounts while cheap ones make up the bulk. This is common enough to have its own industry nickname: “label dressing” or “fairy dusting” — including an ingredient at a token amount so its name can appear on the panel.

We are not asserting that is what happens here. We cannot, and neither can anyone else outside the company, which is precisely the point. The blend removes the possibility of checking in either direction.

What it costs you specifically

Four things you cannot do:

  • Compare against research. You cannot divide a label amount by a study dose if there is no label amount.
  • Compare against competitors. A rival product publishing 500 mg of berberine is comparable to nothing here.
  • Calculate value. Cost per milligram of active is the only price comparison that means anything, and it is unavailable.
  • Assess your own dose for safety. If you already take berberine separately, you cannot know your combined total.

What good disclosure looks like

Increasingly, brands publish full panels as a selling point — “fully disclosed,” “no proprietary blends,” “every dose on the label.” That trend exists because buyers started noticing, and it is the single strongest quality signal available in a market with no pre-market review.

Valiora does not do this. Its page is unusually honest in other respects — no fake urgency, no anchor pricing, no disease claims — which makes the opacity here stand out more, not less. Ask for the amounts in writing before ordering.

Independent background reading, none of it selling anything: MedlinePlus on dietary supplements, Examine and NHLBI on sleep. For the applied version of this on our own pages, see the full ingredient breakdown and interaction table or the Valiora official website reference.

What we would do

Take the ingredient list to a pharmacist before ordering, get a baseline fasting glucose and lipid panel so you have something to compare against, and choose the three-bottle package rather than the six — it covers the ninety days the ingredient trials actually used without leaving you holding three unopened bottles months after the refund window has closed. Diarise day 50 on the day you order.

How to verify any of this

Every figure above comes from a source you can check yourself: the official order page, the published return terms, the manufacturer’s own artwork, or peer-reviewed literature. Where an amount is not disclosed by the manufacturer, we say so rather than estimating it. If you find something here that is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will re-check it and re-date the page.

Frequently asked

A group of ingredients declared with a total weight only. Components must be listed in descending order by weight, but individual amounts need not be disclosed.

No total is published either, which means even the descending-order ranking cannot be combined with arithmetic to narrow the possibilities.

Not automatically, but it removes your ability to check. For a three-ingredient formula made of well-known compounds, the intellectual-property argument is weak.

About this article

Disclaimer. This formula contains berberine, which is contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding and newborns because it displaces bilirubin from albumin. Berberine also inhibits CYP450 enzymes, which raises the blood levels of many prescription medicines rather than lowering them, and it lowers blood glucose in its own right. Take the ingredient list to a pharmacist before ordering.
